How common is car theft in Louisiana? It depends on what part of Louisiana you are talking about. As a recent report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau indicates, the different metro areas in the state vary greatly when it comes to auto theft rate.
The report estimated the auto theft rates for 2017 of over 380 metro areas in the United States. It then ranked them, with the No. 1 spot being the metro area with the highest rate.
The top-ranked Louisiana metro area in the report was New Orleans-Metairie. It was found to have the 64th highest auto theft rate in the country.
The other Louisiana metro areas that were in the top 100 were Lake Charles, Alexandria, Shreveport-Bossier City and Baton Rouge.
Next in line were the Hammond and Monroe metro areas. Both were ranked in the 100s.
The two areas which had the lowest auto theft rates among the Louisiana metro areas looked at in the report were Lafayette and Houma-Thibodaux. Both ranked in the 200s nationally.
How common auto thefts are in an area has big impacts on car owners in that area. It can also have considerable implications for auto insurers that operate in the area. For one, it could affect how likely such companies are to receive theft claims from their policyholders. How many theft claims an auto insurer receives, what issues come up for it in connection to such claims and how it addresses such issues can all have considerable impacts on an insurer’s overall well-being.
